Streaming video on Windows Mobile 5 SmartPhone

This article is summary of all information I collected during my investigation if and how it is possible to stream the video on Windows Mobile 5 equipped SmartPhone or PDA.

The story started when I realized that it'll be nice to watch the news in the kitchen where I don't have any TV set. I decided to use small screen portable device which doesn't need any cables to play the audio/video signal.

On the left side of the page you can find the hardware and software prerequisities to perform this task.

The kick-off article which helped me a lot is located here.

Server side setup

I will focus on VLC for Windows because the DVB-T tuner built in my PCMCIA TV card isn't supported on Linux yet (as I found it is Xcieve 3028).

Sofware which is needed to stream the video: - VLC (Video LAN project) - Microsoft ActiveSync () - TV card software for your card (if you want to stream TV signal)

In many articles I've found how to setup the VLC, but none of these works out of the box.
Some issues I faced were following:

  1. No video no audio - just black screen or noise in the VLC window
  2. Audio plays locally, video is missing
  3. Video is still
  4. Video playback works fine, no audio at all
I will describe how I resolved these issues below.

Here is the complete setup of VLC I had to do on my platform (TO BE CONTINUED...)

Client setup

The description how to play the stream from server on your smartphone follows.

Issues: Windows Media Player fails with the following error:
